Red-winged Tinamou

The Red-winged Tinamou, Rhynchotus rufescens, is a ground-dwelling bird native to the grasslands and savannas of South America. It belongs to the Tinamidae family, a group of paleognath birds that are ancient in evolutionary terms and share a common ancestor with flightless ratites like the ostrich and emu. Despite their capacity for flight, these birds are evolutionarily adapted to terrestrial life, utilizing their rounded wings and tails primarily for short, explosive bursts to escape predators rather than sustained soaring.

The species was first formally described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1815. In ornithological collections, specimens of Rhynchotus rufescens are often categorized by their distinctive tawny-rufous plumage and barred flanks. The bird's design—specifically its cryptically colored, rounded wing and tail structure—reflects a highly specialized adaptation to the open savanna environment, allowing it to remain camouflaged against the grasses while remaining ready for quick, low-altitude flight.
