Ruby-crowned Tanager

The Ruby-crowned Tanager, Tachyphonus coronatus, is a passerine bird endemic to the Atlantic forests of southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Taxonomically placed within the Thraupidae family, the species is distinct for the male's striking black plumage paired with a concealed crown of vibrant crimson feathers, which is typically only revealed during displays. It occupies a niche in the mid-canopy of humid forests, where its presence is often marked more by its vocalizations than its visual display.
