Sand-colored Nighthawk

The Sand-colored Nighthawk, Chordeiles rupestris, is a species native to the tropical river basins of South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco watersheds. Unlike its relatives that prefer open scrubland, this species is uniquely adapted to life along sandy riverbanks and sandbars. Its specialized plumage, characterized by pale, sand-colored tones and intricate mottling, serves as a form of natural camouflage, allowing it to remain virtually invisible against the river deposits where it nests.

The bird is distinguished by its exceptionally broad wings and a distinctly notched tail, features that grant it an agile, buoyant flight pattern as it captures insects over water. Ornithologists have noted that while it shares the family traits of the Caprimulgidae, its preference for riparian habitats sets it apart. The species was formally described in the 19th century, with its design reflecting an evolutionary specialization for high-speed aerial hunting in low-light environments, a trait that continues to be a subject of interest in studies of neotropical avian biodiversity.
