Santa Marta Sabrewing

The Santa Marta sabrewing is a rare hummingbird species native to the high-altitude forests of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Named for its distinctive broad wings and the pointed, notched tail feathers that characterize its genus, it represents a highly specialized evolutionary adaptation to the humid, montane environments of the region. Ornithological interest in the species began in the mid-19th century, highlighting the intense biodiversity of this isolated mountain range.

First formally described by Osbert Salvin and Frederick DuCane Godman in 1879, the species was historically considered elusive due to its restricted range and the dense, misty nature of its cloud forest habitat. Its design, characterized by striking iridescent plumage and a robust, curved bill, allows it to thrive in a specific microclimate. Because of habitat loss, the Santa Marta sabrewing remains a subject of significant conservation concern, serving as a flagship species for the protection of its fragile Andean ecosystem.
