Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater

The Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola frontalis) was formally described by the English ornithologist Philip Sclater in 1858. As a member of the Cotingidae family, this species inhabits the humid montane forests of the eastern Andes, spanning from Colombia through Ecuador to Peru. It emerged as a distinct subject of study during the 19th-century boom in biological exploration of South America, where taxonomists sought to catalog the extraordinary biodiversity of the Andean cloud forest ecosystems.

The species is defined by its rounded wing and tail morphology, physical traits typical of cotingids that rely on short, explosive flights within dense forest understories. Its design is evolutionary, optimized for a life spent foraging for fruit in the canopy.
