Secretarybird

The secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a unique bird of prey endemic to the open grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. Evolutionarily distinct, it is classified within its own family, Sagittariidae, and is characterized by its terrestrial hunting style, which relies on its long, powerful legs to stomp prey—most notably snakes—into submission. Its name is thought to derive from the crest of long, quill-like black feathers on the back of its head, which reminded early European observers of the secretaries of the eighteenth century who tucked pens behind their ears.

The bird’s morphology represents a fascinating architectural adaptation to its environment.
