Seychelles Magpie-Robin

The Seychelles Magpie-Robin, Copsychus sechellarum, is a critically endangered passerine bird native to the Seychelles archipelago. Historically widespread across the islands, the species faced near-extinction by the 1960s due to habitat loss and the introduction of invasive predators, particularly cats and rats. Its survival is almost entirely attributed to intensive conservation efforts, most notably on Frégate Island, where captive breeding and predator eradication programs stabilized the population starting in the late 20th century.

Physically, the bird is distinguished by its glossy, black plumage and distinctive white wing patches, which are particularly prominent when the bird is in flight. Ornithologists note its rounded wing shape, which aids in its characteristic low-altitude, agile flight through forest undergrowth, contrasted by its long, pointed tail used for balance while foraging. These evolutionary traits reflect its adaptation to the dense, humid tropical forests that historically characterized the Seychelles ecosystem.
