Seychelles Warbler

The Seychelles warbler is a small passerine bird endemic to the granitic islands of the Seychelles. Its history is one of the most successful conservation narratives in ornithology, as the species was pushed to the brink of extinction by the early 20th century due to the destruction of native habitats. By 1968, the entire world population was confined to a single island, Cousin Island, numbering fewer than 30 individuals. The concerted efforts of conservationists and the acquisition of the island for protection allowed the population to recover and eventually be reintroduced to other islands across the archipelago.

The species is characterized by its dull olive-brown plumage, rounded wings, and a distinctively notched tail, which facilitate its movement through the dense coastal vegetation it inhabits. Biologically, it is studied extensively for its complex cooperative breeding behaviors, where offspring often remain to help raise subsequent broods. Evolutionary biologists, including Jan Komdeur, have utilized the warbler as a model for understanding the environmental and genetic factors that drive such social structures, ensuring that the bird is as significant to the scientific record as it is to the local ecosystem.
