Slender-billed Vulture

The Slender-billed Vulture, Gyps tenuirostris, was once widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. As a member of the Gyps genus, its evolutionary development favored a broad wingspan and a rounded tail, physical traits designed for efficient soaring and searching for carrion across vast landscapes. This bird occupies a critical ecological niche as a scavenger, traditionally playing a vital role in local waste management and sanitary cycles within its native regions.

The species gained distinct scientific recognition following its reclassification as a separate entity from the closely related long-billed vulture. Its recent history is deeply defined by the catastrophic population collapse of the late 20th century, largely attributed to the widespread veterinary use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac. Conservation efforts have since shifted toward intensive captive breeding programs and habitat protection to address the species' critical status on the IUCN Red List.
