Snow Mountain Quail

The Snow Mountain Quail, or Synoicus monorthonyx, is a species endemic to the high-altitude grasslands of the Snow Mountains in Western New Guinea. First described by Ernst Mayr in the 1930s, this elusive bird emerged from the context of early 20th-century ornithological expeditions into the alpine zones of the Weyland Range. Its existence was documented during a period when naturalists were working to categorize the unique biodiversity of the island’s isolated interior highlands.

The bird is characterized by its distinctively rounded wings and tail, physical adaptations suited for life in dense, high-altitude shrubbery rather than long-distance flight. It was initially classified within the genus Anurophasis, reflecting its short-tailed morphology. Because of its extremely restricted range and the rugged, inaccessible nature of its habitat, the species remains rarely observed by humans, serving as a quiet testament to the specialized evolutionary paths found in New Guinea’s alpine ecosystem.
