Somali Bee-eater

The Somali Bee-eater, Merops revoilii, is a small, striking member of the Meropidae family primarily found in the Horn of Africa. Named in honor of the French explorer Georges Révoil, who documented the region's natural history in the late 19th century, the species is adapted to arid scrublands and semi-deserts. Its physical profile is defined by a slender build, pointed wings, and a distinctly notched tail, features that facilitate its agile, aerial hawking style when hunting bees and other insects.

The species was formally described in 1882 by Émile Oustalet. Ornithologists often highlight its plumage, which features a mix of green, yellow, and a distinct white patch on the throat, as an evolutionary response to the harsh, bright lighting of its native habitat. Unlike many of its more migratory cousins, the Somali Bee-eater is largely sedentary, remaining within its specialized ecological niche, which has made it a subject of interest for researchers studying the divergence of African arid-zone avifauna.
