Sooty Thicket-Fantail

The Sooty Thicket-Fantail, known scientifically as Rhipidura threnothorax, is a passerine bird native to the lowland rainforests and swampy thickets of New Guinea. As a member of the Rhipiduridae family, its evolutionary lineage is defined by the unique, restless behavior characteristic of fantails. It was first formally described by the German ornithologist Salomon Müller in the mid-19th century, a period marked by extensive biological exploration of the Malay Archipelago and its surrounding regions, as naturalists sought to document the extraordinary biodiversity of the Australasian tropics.

The bird’s physical morphology is a study in specialized adaptation for dense, shadowed habitats.
