Southern Red Bishop

The Southern Red Bishop, Euplectes orix, is a member of the weaver family native to the wetlands and grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. Ornithologically, it is defined by its striking seasonal dimorphism, where the male undergoes a dramatic transformation during the breeding season. The species was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, a time when European naturalists were intensely cataloging the biological diversity of the African continent to better understand avian taxonomy and geographic distribution.

The bird's design reflects a highly specialized evolutionary adaptation for courtship. The male develops a brilliant crimson and black plumage, a visual display meant to attract mates within its territory.
