Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird

The Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird, scientifically known as Tilmatura dupontii, was formally described by the French naturalist René Primevère Lesson in 1832. Named in honor of the French botanist and patron of science Jean-Louis Dupont, the species is native to the cloud forests and mountain scrub of Central America, primarily found in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Within the taxonomy of Trochilidae, it remains the sole member of its genus, a classification that highlights its distinct evolutionary trajectory compared to its more widespread avian neighbors.

The bird is distinguished by the iridescent, fanned tail of the male, which features elongated outer feathers that contrast sharply with its pointed, narrow wings. These physical characteristics are highly specialized for the bird's rapid, hovering flight patterns in high-altitude environments.
