Spot-breasted Oriole

The Spot-breasted Oriole (Icterus pectoralis) is a species of passerine bird native to the tropical dry forests and scrublands of Central America, primarily found from southern Mexico through to Costa Rica. Its name derives from the distinctive dark, tear-shaped spots that adorn its bright orange breast and flanks. Evolutionarily, these markings serve as a diagnostic feature distinguishing it from other oriole species found in similar ranges.

The species was first formally described by Johann Georg Wagler in 1829. Ornithologists note that in the mid-20th century, a population was introduced to the Miami area in Florida, likely due to the escape or release of captive birds from the pet trade. Since that introduction, the species has successfully established a self-sustaining, non-native population in urban and suburban landscapes of South Florida, where they are now a well-documented fixture for regional birdwatchers.
