Sri Lanka Whistling-Thrush

The Sri Lanka whistling-thrush, known scientifically as Myophonus blighi, is a rare passerine bird endemic to the central highlands of Sri Lanka. First described by the British army officer and ornithologist Edward Frederick Kelaart in 1854, the species was named to honor the Honorable Samuel Bligh, a tea planter who provided the type specimen. It serves as a classic example of the island's unique biodiversity, having evolved in isolation within the dense, humid montane cloud forests.

The bird is characterized by its distinctively dark, iridescent plumage, rounded wings, and pointed tail, features that have long fascinated naturalists documenting the avifauna of the Indian subcontinent. As a member of the Muscicapidae family, its design is adapted for life in the shadowy undergrowth of its restricted habitat. Because it is elusive and inhabits a narrow geographic range, the species has historically been highly sought after by ornithologists and birdwatchers, though it remains protected and strictly observed in the wild due to its status as an endangered species.
