Stripe-headed Antpitta

The Stripe-headed Antpitta, or Grallaria andicolus, is a species of bird in the family Grallariidae endemic to the high-altitude humid forests of the Andes in Ecuador and Peru. Evolutionarily adapted to life in the dense, shaded undergrowth of montane cloud forests, this bird developed its characteristic rounded wing and tail shapes to facilitate short, agile flights through heavy foliage rather than long-distance migration.

First described in the scientific literature during the nineteenth century, the species is recognized by its distinct facial markings and skulking behavior. Because it prefers the dark, mossy floor of high-elevation forests, it remains a challenging subject for field ornithologists. Its design—compact and earth-toned—reflects a specialized adaptation to the specific light and shadow patterns of its alpine environment, where it maintains a solitary existence among the understory.
