Tepui Swift

The Tepui Swift, or Streptoprocne phelpsi, is a bird species endemic to the tepuis of the Guiana Highlands in South America. It was scientifically described in 1953 by American ornithologist Kenneth Carroll Parkes, who named the species in honor of William H. Phelps, a prominent explorer and ornithologist of Venezuelan bird life. The bird evolved to thrive in the high-altitude, rugged environments of the region's isolated tabletop mountains, developing physical traits—such as its characteristic pointed wings and forked tail—that are perfectly adapted for high-speed aerial foraging in challenging, mountainous winds.

The design of the Tepui Swift is a testament to natural evolutionary pressure, prioritizing aerodynamic efficiency over ornamental plumage. Its morphology is typical of the Apodidae family, emphasizing sustained flight and rapid maneuverability. Because of its restricted and inaccessible habitat, the species remains relatively elusive, and scientific study has largely been concentrated on expeditions to the specific tepui summits of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. It is recognized by the scientific community not for its aesthetic novelty, but for its unique role in the biodiversity of one of the world's most ancient geological formations.
