Tessmann's Flycatcher

Tessmann's Flycatcher was first described by the German zoologist Hans von Berlepsch in 1907. It was named in honor of Günther Tessmann, a German explorer and botanist who collected natural history specimens during his extensive expeditions through the Congo Basin and Spanish Guinea in the early 20th century. The species was formally classified to document the avian diversity of the dense, humid rainforests of West-Central Africa, a region that was undergoing significant biological surveying at the time.

The bird is characterized by its inconspicuous, brownish plumage, which serves as an adaptation to the dim light of the forest understory. Its physical profile, defined by its rounded wings and notched tail, reflects its life as an inhabitant of thick vegetation where maneuverability is prioritized over long-distance soaring.
