Togian Boobook

The Togian Boobook, Ninox burhani, is a species of owl endemic to the Togian Islands of Indonesia. It was first formally described by scientists in 2012, following field expeditions that identified it as a distinct species based on its unique vocalizations and specific morphological differences from its nearest relative, the Moluccan Boobook. Its discovery underscores the rich, isolated biodiversity of the Togian archipelago, an area that has long served as a focus for ornithological study due to its complex evolutionary history.

Physically, the species is defined by its rounded wing and tail shapes, which are adaptations suited to its forest habitat. The plumage is generally dark brown with white spotting, consistent with the camouflaging requirements of an nocturnal owl within dense canopy cover.
