Virginia's Warbler

Virginia's Warbler was first described by Spencer Fullerton Baird in 1860, based on a specimen collected in the mountains of New Mexico. It was named in honor of Mary Virginia Anderson, the wife of the naturalist William Wallace Anderson, who provided the initial type specimen. The bird represents a specialized adaptation to the dry, shrubby slopes of the American Southwest and the Great Basin, occupying a niche distinct from its woodland-dwelling relatives.

The species is characterized by a subtle, understated plumage that reflects its evolutionary history as an inhabitant of pinyon-juniper woodlands and oak-brush habitats. Its physical structure, featuring rounded wings suited for maneuvering through dense scrub and a notched tail for stability in flight, is indicative of a lineage that has adapted to high-altitude terrain. Ornithologists often view the discovery of this species as a significant contribution to the mapping of North American biodiversity during the mid-19th century.
