Vogelkop Owlet-nightjar

The Vogelkop owlet-nightjar, Aegotheles affinis, is a cryptic avian species native to the highland forests of the Vogelkop Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia. Long considered a subspecies of the mountain owlet-nightjar, it was elevated to full species status following recent taxonomic revisions based on distinct vocalizations and morphological differences. It inhabits high-altitude mossy forests, where its elusive, nocturnal behavior and reliance on dense, undisturbed canopy have kept it largely hidden from scientific scrutiny for decades.
