West Mexican Chachalaca

The West Mexican Chachalaca, known scientifically as Ortalis poliocephala, is a species endemic to the Pacific slope of western Mexico. It is a member of the Cracidae family, a group of birds that has remained relatively unchanged over evolutionary time, often described as possessing primitive characteristics that link them to ancestral galliform birds. Its existence is deeply tied to the tropical deciduous forests and scrublands of the region, where its distinct, raucous vocalizations serve as a defining feature of the local ecosystem.
