Western Tragopan

The Western Tragopan, scientifically classified as Tragopan melanocephalus, is a rare pheasant native to the high-altitude temperate forests of the Himalayas. Historically, the species has been defined by its elusive nature and distinct plumage, leading to its identification by naturalists in the 19th century as a key indicator of undisturbed forest ecosystems. It was first formally described by John Edward Gray in 1829, during a period of intense European biological exploration in northern India.
