White-browed Meadowlark

The White-browed Meadowlark, known scientifically as Leistes superciliaris, is a passerine bird native to the grasslands and wetlands of South America. It is a member of the Icteridae family, which includes New World blackbirds, orioles, and meadowlarks. Its evolutionary history is deeply tied to the expansion of open habitats across the southern continent, where it evolved distinct physical traits such as broad wings for localized flight and a characteristically pointed tail that aids in balance during terrestrial foraging.

The species was formally described by ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1850. The visual design of the male is particularly notable for the striking white supercilium—or eyebrow—that contrasts sharply with its deep black plumage and bright red breast. Ornithologists often study these birds for their complex song patterns and territorial displays, viewing them as a quintessential representative of Neotropical grassland avifauna that has successfully adapted to human-modified landscapes like pastures and rice fields.
