White-lored Tyrannulet

The White-lored Tyrannulet, Ornithion inerme, is a small member of the tyrant flycatcher family, primarily native to the canopy and sub-canopy layers of tropical forests in the Amazon basin and the Guiana Shield. It was first formally described by the German ornithologist Carl Eduard Hellmayr in 1927. As a species, it exists as part of the diverse evolutionary radiation of Neotropical birds, adapted for a life spent almost entirely in the high, dense foliage where its distinctive call is more often heard than its small, olive-toned body is seen.

The physical characteristics of the species, such as its characteristically rounded wings and slightly notched tail, are functional adaptations to its niche as a gleaner in dense vegetation. These traits, along with its specific white loral spot, were documented by explorers and naturalists who sought to catalog the biodiversity of South American forest ecosystems.
