The white-throated antbird was formally described by ornithologist John Patton Zimmer in 1937. It is endemic to the humid forests of the southwestern Amazon basin, primarily residing in the understory where it follows army ant swarms to forage for insects flushed out by the ants' passage.
The species is distinguished by its rounded wings and notched tail, physical adaptations that facilitate agile, short-burst flight within dense vegetation. It was formerly placed within the genus Phlegopsis but was moved to the monotypic genus Oneillornis, named in honor of John O'Neill, an ornithologist known for his extensive work documenting Peruvian bird species.
