White-throated Tinamou

The White-throated Tinamou (Tinamus guttatus) was formally described by the Austrian ornithologist August von Pelzeln in 1863. Like other members of the Tinamidae family, this species evolved within the dense rainforests of the Amazon Basin, functioning as a ground-dwelling bird that relies on its cryptic plumage rather than flight to evade predators. Its physical characteristics, including its rounded wings and tail, are highly adapted for terrestrial locomotion and short, explosive bursts of flight through thick undergrowth, reflecting a lineage that has occupied the forest floor for millions of years.

The taxonomy and study of the White-throated Tinamou emerged during a period of intense European biological exploration in South America.
