Woodford's Rail

The Woodford's rail, scientifically known as Gallirallus woodfordi, is a flightless or near-flightless bird endemic to the Solomon Islands. First described by William Robert Ogilvie-Grant in 1889, the species was named after Charles Morris Woodford, a British naturalist and the first resident commissioner of the Solomon Islands. Its evolution, characterized by rounded wings and a square tail, reflects a long-term adaptation to an isolated island environment where the pressure for sustained flight was reduced.

Historically, the species has been difficult to document due to its elusive nature and the dense, rugged terrain of the forests it inhabits. It belongs to the Rallidae family, a group of birds known for their adaptability to marshy and forested habitats, though this specific rail is noted for its preference for higher elevations.
