Yellow-billed Amazon

The Yellow-billed Amazon, scientifically classified as Amazona collaria, is a parrot species endemic to the island of Jamaica. Like many members of the Amazon genus, this bird is characterized by its robust build, broad wings, and rounded tail, features that have evolved to facilitate agile flight within its native tropical forest canopy. Historically, these birds have been prized for their distinct plumage and intelligence, though their populations have faced significant pressure due to habitat loss and historical trapping practices.

The taxonomy and natural history of the species were formally documented during the era of early European naturalists exploring the Caribbean. These birds are typically found in the humid limestone forests of Jamaica, living in small social groups. Because they are not as widely held in private collections as their mainland cousins, their design—by nature—is defined by their specific adaptations to island life, such as their specialized beak morphology and the subtle variations in their green and yellow coloration which serve as camouflage in the dense canopy.
