Yellow-billed Cotinga

The Yellow-billed Cotinga, scientifically classified as Carpodectes antoniae, is a rare cotingid endemic to the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and western Panama. First described in 1914 by the ornithologist George Kruck Cherrie, the species was named in honor of Antonia Alfaro, the wife of Anastasio Alfaro, the director of the National Museum of Costa Rica. Its existence is tied to the fragile mangrove ecosystems of Central America, which have historically dictated the bird's limited geographical distribution and elusive nature.

The bird is characterized by a distinctive morphology, including broad wings adapted for specific flight patterns and a rounded tail that aids in maneuverability within dense canopy and mangrove environments. While not a designed object in the traditional sense, its evolution reflects a specialized adaptation to lowland forest habitats.
