Yellow-faced Parrotlet

The yellow-faced parrotlet, known scientifically as Forpus xanthops, is a species endemic to a restricted range in the Marañón River valley of Peru. Unlike many of its relatives in the parrotlet genus, it is distinguished by its unique plumage, characterized by a bright yellow head and wing coverts that contrast with its greyish-green body. It was first described by the ornithologist Osbert Salvin in 1895, based on specimens collected in northern Peru. Its rarity and specific habitat requirements have made it a subject of significant interest for avian conservationists concerned with the preservation of dry forest ecosystems.

The design of this bird, shaped by evolutionary pressure, features a distinctively rounded wing shape and a pointed tail, which are specialized traits for its flight patterns within the scrub forests it inhabits. In the context of aviculture, the species is considered highly uncommon and is subject to strict international trade regulations under CITES Appendix I. Because of its threatened status in the wild, most scientific and ornithological discussions center on habitat protection rather than historical collection, as the species is rarely kept outside of professional conservation breeding programs.
