Yellow-naped Amazon

The Yellow-naped Amazon, or Amazona auropalliata, is a psittacine bird native to the Pacific coast of Central America, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Costa Rica. Historically, these birds have been prized for their vibrant plumage and remarkable capacity for vocal mimicry, which led to their significant presence in the global pet trade throughout the 20th century. They are characterized by their broad wings and pointed tails, features that facilitate their agile movement through the tropical dry forests they inhabit.

The taxonomy of the species was formally described by French ornithologist René Lesson in 1842. Beyond their biological classification, the species serves as an important ecological indicator for the health of Central American forest ecosystems. In recent decades, the birds have faced severe population declines due to habitat loss and intense historical trapping, leading to their categorization as critically endangered. Modern efforts now focus on conservation and the protection of their remaining natural nesting grounds.
