Yellow-shouldered Amazon

The Yellow-shouldered Amazon, or Amazona barbadensis, is a parrot species native to a fragmented range across parts of Venezuela and the islands of the Dutch Caribbean. Historically prized for their striking plumage and vocal abilities, these birds evolved in arid scrublands and mangroves. Their specific physical markers, including broad wings suited for steady flight and a distinctively pointed tail, allowed them to navigate their dry, brush-heavy habitats with efficiency.

The species has long been subject to rigorous conservation scrutiny due to its status as a threatened bird. In the mid-20th century, the bird became a focal point for ornithological study as researchers sought to understand the impact of habitat loss and the illegal pet trade on its population. Efforts to document and protect the species have centered on preserving the nesting sites of the remaining wild colonies, which are now largely restricted to protected areas and islands such as Bonaire.
