Yellow-thighed Brushfinch

The yellow-thighed brushfinch is a passerine bird native to the montane forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. First described by George Newbold Lawrence in 1868, the species is distinguished by its namesake bright yellow thigh feathers which contrast against its largely black plumage. These birds typically occupy the understory of humid forests and shrubby areas, often foraging in pairs or small groups through dense vegetation.

The species belongs to the family Passerellidae and reflects the diverse evolutionary adaptations of brushfinches in the Neotropics. Its rounded wing and tail morphology are characteristic of birds that favor short-distance, maneuverable flight within cluttered forest environments rather than sustained long-distance migration.
