Zappey's Flycatcher

Zappey's Flycatcher, scientifically classified as Cyanoptila cumatilis, was long considered a subspecies of the Blue-and-white Flycatcher before being elevated to full species status based on distinct morphological and genetic differences. It was originally named in honor of Walter Reuben Zappey, a collector who participated in significant biological expeditions in China during the early 20th century. The bird is characterized by its migratory nature, breeding in northern China and wintering in Southeast Asia, inhabiting forested mountain regions that have been subject to intense ornithological study.

The bird's design reflects its adaptation to dense woodland environments, featuring a distinctively rounded wing shape that facilitates maneuverability under a canopy and a notched tail that aids in quick, agile flight. Taxonomists and ornithologists recognized the bird for its vibrant cobalt-blue plumage in males, which serves a vital role in display and territorial behavior.
