Where it came from
Pirates of Maracaibo, released in 2023 by Geronimo Games, serves as a standalone successor to the 2019 strategy game Maracaibo, designed by Alexander Pfister. While the original title was known for its complex campaign and deck-building mechanics, this iteration was crafted to provide a more accessible, streamlined experience while retaining the core Caribbean-themed exploration and engine-building gameplay that fans of the series appreciate.
The game features artwork by a team of illustrators who sought to evoke the golden age of piracy through a vibrant, tabletop-friendly aesthetic. The design emphasizes modularity and replayability, allowing players to utilize a 'multi-use card' system where every card can act as a location, a special action, or a permanent bonus. It was received favorably by the board gaming community as a thoughtful refinement of Pfister's systems, specifically lauded for its faster pace and reduced setup time compared to its predecessor.
