Where it came from
War Chest was released in 2018 by Alderac Entertainment Group, designed by Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson. The game was conceptualized as a modern evolution of the classic bag-building mechanic, stripping away complex board layouts to focus on tactical unit deployment and area control. Its minimalist design relies on high-quality weighted poker chips representing different military units, a choice intended to give the game a tactile, substantial feel during play.
The aesthetic direction of the game, featuring stark, clean iconography, was crafted to evoke the feeling of high-stakes historical warfare while remaining accessible to a wide audience. Upon its release, it was well-received by the board gaming community for its combination of elegant rules and deep strategic variety. It remains a notable title in the strategy genre for its ability to balance luck through the bag-building system with the deterministic nature of its movement and combat mechanics.
