Black Appetite. White Food.

Published by Routledge in 2019, Black Appetite. White Food. emerged from the academic and activist work of Dr. Jamila Lyiscott. The text serves as a critical pedagogical intervention, building upon her viral TED Talk, '3 Ways to Speak English,' to explore the intersections of language, race, and education. It was developed to provide educators and scholars with a framework for understanding how systemic structures influence the classroom experience and the development of Black youth.

The book is designed as a hybrid of scholarly inquiry and accessible reflection, intended to challenge dominant cultural paradigms within Western education systems. Lyiscott utilizes the metaphor of 'white food' to critique how traditional curricula often neglect or marginalize the cultural experiences of students of color. Upon its release, the work was noted for its contribution to the field of critical pedagogy, receiving praise for its uncompromising approach to examining linguistic justice and equitable teaching practices.
