Dick Turpin's ride

Alfred Noyes published this dramatic narrative poem, officially titled The Highwayman, in 1906, though it saw many standalone illustrated editions in the following decades, including this 1927 release by F. A. Stokes. The work is deeply rooted in the romanticized literature of the Edwardian era, capturing the atmospheric and tragic folk-mythology surrounding the historical figure of Dick Turpin and his ill-fated love for the landlord's daughter.

This specific edition is notable for its evocative illustrations, which were crafted to lean into the melancholic, cinematic quality of Noyes’s rhythmic meter. The design intended to bridge the gap between classic Victorian-style storytelling and the burgeoning aesthetic of the 1920s gift-book market. Upon its release, it was well-received as a staple of atmospheric, dramatic verse, remaining a popular choice for school anthologies and private libraries for its distinctively moody, rhythmic narrative style.
