Elliott Erwitt's New York

Elliott Erwitt’s New York was published by teNeues in 2011 as a visual homage to the city the Magnum photographer called home for decades. Drawing from his extensive archive, the collection spans Erwitt’s career, capturing candid, often humorous, and poignant black-and-white moments on the streets of Manhattan. It serves as both a retrospective of his distinctive street photography style and a historical document of the urban environment through the mid-to-late 20th century.

The book design adheres to the high production standards associated with teNeues’ art photography volumes, favoring large-scale reproductions that emphasize Erwitt's mastery of composition and timing. Erwitt, known for his ability to find absurdity and humanity in everyday occurrences, curated these images to reflect the eclectic spirit of New York. Upon release, the volume was well-received by critics and photography enthusiasts who praised it for crystallizing the intersection of documentary realism and Erwitt’s trademark ironic wit.
