Glenn Gould, music & mind

Geoffrey Payzant's 'Glenn Gould: Music and Mind' was first published in 1978 and remains a foundational text for understanding the idiosyncratic philosophy of the Canadian pianist. Born out of a deep academic fascination with Gould’s recording aesthetic, the book serves as a critical exploration of his departure from the concert stage to embrace the studio as a creative instrument. Payzant, a philosopher by training, meticulously unpacks the aesthetic theories that informed Gould’s controversial interpretive choices.

The book is notable for its serious, analytical approach, which avoids the sensationalism often found in biographical accounts of the pianist. Payzant’s design—both in its intellectual architecture and its presentation—aims to synthesize the rigorous musicality of Gould’s work with the intellectual climate of the late twentieth century. Upon its release, it was widely received as one of the few documents that genuinely engaged with the theoretical underpinnings of Gould's artistic life rather than focusing solely on his public persona.
