I.N. Kramer & Son, seedsmen and florists

Published in 1897, this seed catalog was produced by I.N. Kramer & Son, a prominent firm based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During the late 19th century, regional seed companies served as essential conduits for horticultural information, bridging the gap between scientific breeding and the needs of domestic gardeners. These catalogs were designed not merely as price lists, but as comprehensive gardening manuals that guided customers through the intricacies of regional cultivation.

The catalog reflects the aesthetic trends of the Gilded Age, utilizing dense typography and woodcut illustrations to showcase the variety of flora available to Midwestern settlers. The design emphasized reliability and botanical accuracy, serving as a marketing tool for the company's expansion. While such ephemeral trade literature was often discarded after the planting season, these copies have been preserved by agricultural archives as primary evidence of the era's agricultural practices and the commercial strategies employed by family-run seed businesses.
