Keisai ryakugashiki

Keisai ryakugashiki, published in 1795 by Suharaya Ichibe, stands as a hallmark of the Japanese 'ryakuga-shiki' or 'abbreviated drawing style' movement. Created by the artist Masayoshi Kitao, who had previously trained under the renowned ukiyo-e master Kitao Shigemasa, the book served as a practical guide for amateur artists. By simplifying complex subjects into basic geometric shapes and fluid, minimalist lines, Masayoshi sought to democratize art, making the process of sketching accessible to a wider audience beyond professional ateliers.

The publication arrived during a period of rising literacy and artistic interest among the urban merchant class in Edo-period Japan. Masayoshi’s approach was celebrated for its elegant economy of form, which bridged the gap between traditional Kano-school techniques and the popular aesthetic of the time. The work was well-received by contemporaries for its instructional utility, and its innovative visual language significantly influenced the development of manga-style instructional manuals, cementing Masayoshi’s reputation as a key transitional figure in Japanese graphic arts.
