Mordecai, the man and his message

Published in 1997 by Howard University Press, Mordecai: The Man and His Message serves as a scholarly biography of Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, the first African American president of Howard University. Richard I. McKinney, a longtime colleague and associate of Johnson, drew upon years of personal observation and archival research to chronicle Johnson's profound influence on American education and the civil rights movement. The work was commissioned and released to preserve the legacy of a man widely considered a visionary administrator and a pivotal intellectual figure in 20th-century Black history.

McKinney’s narrative design focuses on framing Johnson not only as an academic leader but as a moral force who navigated the complexities of segregation and institutional growth. The book was received as a vital primary resource, particularly for historians interested in the development of historically Black colleges and universities.
