Where it came from
Published in 1967 by Viking Press, Orange-Robed Boy was written by Patricia Wallace Garlan and Maryjane Dunstan during a period of burgeoning Western interest in Southeast Asian culture and Buddhist traditions. The narrative follows a young boy in Burma who prepares for his temporary ordination as a novice monk, a rite of passage known as a shinbyu, providing a gentle exploration of local customs and spiritual life intended for a juvenile audience.
The book is notable for its evocative illustrations by Pau Oo Thet, a renowned Burmese artist whose work captured the serene atmosphere and daily rituals of his homeland. His contributions were essential to the book’s reception, as they provided an authentic visual counterpart to the authors' storytelling. The inclusion of the original dust jacket is particularly significant for collectors, as the jacket art often showcases the vibrant, specific aesthetic style of Thet's original paintings, which were highly regarded for their cultural sensitivity.
