Terraria Gigantica

Terraria Gigantica was published in 2015 by the University of New Mexico Press as a comprehensive survey of Dana Fritz’s photographic work focused on the Biosphere 2 project in Arizona. The book captures the ambitious and surreal nature of this massive, hermetically sealed research facility, which was originally built in the late 1980s to simulate Earth's ecosystems. Fritz’s interest lay in the tension between human attempts to curate and replicate natural environments and the inevitable, wild entropy that occurred within the facility's glass-enclosed spaces.

The design of the book emphasizes the grand scale of the interior environments, showcasing Fritz’s ability to frame the lush, artificial landscapes against the stark mechanical architecture of the structure. Through her lens, the photographs document the legacy of the failed scientific experiment, transforming the site into a meditation on climate change and humanity's desire to control nature. The work has been noted by critics and photography historians for its clinical yet atmospheric aesthetic, offering a haunting visual record of a space that remains a significant landmark in both ecological and architectural history.
