Where it came from
Published in 2017 by Dark Horse Books, The Art of the Witcher serves as a comprehensive visual companion to the celebrated video game trilogy developed by CD Projekt Red. The collection was curated to document the intricate world-building, character evolution, and environmental design that defined The Witcher series, which is itself based on the acclaimed fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. The book acts as a retrospective of the studio's creative efforts to translate Slavic folklore into a gritty, high-fantasy digital medium.
The volume features an extensive array of concept art, sketches, and digital paintings created by the internal art team at CD Projekt Red. Its design focus was to provide fans and scholars of game design with an intimate look at the iterative process behind iconic characters like Geralt of Rivia and the sprawling landscapes of the Northern Kingdoms. Upon its release, it was well-received by the gaming community for its production quality and its success in contextualizing the visual identity of the franchise for both casual players and dedicated enthusiasts.
