The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray first appeared in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine before being revised and expanded for book publication in 1891. Oscar Wilde wrote the novel as his only foray into long-form fiction, intending to explore the tension between aestheticism, morality, and the consequences of hedonism. The story was heavily influenced by the gothic tradition and contemporary debates regarding the corruption of youth and the power of art to influence life.

Upon its initial serial release, the novel faced intense scrutiny from critics who labeled it immoral and degenerate due to its homoerotic subtext and dark subject matter. Wilde defended his work as a serious exploration of beauty and vanity, though the backlash forced him to add a preface and six additional chapters for the book version to clarify the moral intent of the narrative. Despite the contemporary controversy, it has since become a definitive classic of 19th-century literature and a pillar of the aesthetic movement.
