Where it came from
Released in 2001 by The Jazz Factory, this compilation gathers a selection of tracks centered on compositions either written or co-written by Billie Holiday. It serves as a focused retrospective within her extensive discography, highlighting her role not just as a definitive jazz vocalist, but as an active creative force in the development of her own repertoire.
The album reflects the curatorial efforts of The Jazz Factory label, which specialized in reissuing and organizing classic jazz material for contemporary listeners. While the design and liner notes aim for a standard archival presentation, the collection is valued by listeners for its thematic cohesion, placing Holiday's lyrical contributions alongside her iconic interpretive style during her mid-century prime.
